Physical Health

Physical well-being is the ability to maintain a healthy quality of life and to be able to carry out our daily activities with energy and pleasure. It is about respecting and caring for your body. It involves promoting your health through healthy habits that will lower your risk of disease, increase your energy, decrease your stress, and improve your mental health.

Physical well-being involves making good choices around:

Sleep

As a student, you are busy combining studying, working, and socializing, therefore it is not always easy to get sufficient sleep. During sleep, the body engages in several restoring and maintaining听processes听that affect nearly every part of the body. As a result, a good night鈥檚 sleep, or a lack of sleep, can impact on the body both mentally and physically.

Here are some health benefits of sleep:

  • Increases energy
  • Helps rest the heart and vascular system
  • Boosts memory, learning, and problem-solving
  • Improves mood
  • Supports a healthy weight
  • Helps combat infections and keeps your immune system strong
  • Reduces the risk of injury.

Here are some tips to help you get a better night鈥檚 sleep:

  • Avoid late-night snacking, sugar, caffeine, and alcohol.
  • Turn off electronics, TVs, and computers two hours before bed. This gives your brain a chance to unwind and get ready for sleep.
  • Try reading, listening to soft music or a podcast, or sleep meditation. You may also look for a sleep app.
  • Sleep in a dark room because light stimulates the brain.
  • Use an alarm clock rather than your smartphone or tablet as a wakeup device (plus you won’t hear alerts for texts, emails, etc.)
  • Keep room temperatures on the cooler side: 18-20 掳C.
  • Aim for a consistent bedtime routine and sleep schedule to help your body stay on a regular track. Find a good time for you to go to sleep every night and wake up at the same time every morning.
  • Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep.
  • Include physical activity in your daily or weekly routine.
  • Manage your worries. Bedtime is not the time to try to resolve issues; try to do so earlier in the day or the next day.

Nutrition

A healthy diet plays an important role in your overall well-being because it provides your body with essential nutrients, supports bodily functions and strength, and helps prevent various diseases. A balanced diet can improve your energy levels and mood. Realistically, it may not be easy as a student to eat well every day, but if you can incorporate some healthy choices, sensible portion sizes, and regular eating (3 meals a day including breakfast) into your schedule, it is better than none. You will feel better and have more energy to carry out your daily activities.
